Seqwater is building a new generation of water workers, welcoming 28 new graduates, trainees and apprentices through its Next Generation Program.

Seqwater Acting Chief Executive Officer Dan Spiller said the water industry underpinned the liveability of cities and regions.


“Water is critical to economic growth and environmental outcomes," Mr Spiller said.

“South East Queensland is already considered one of the leaders in water management, with a reputation for innovation especially in the areas of water management and water security with assets like the SEQ Water Grid and Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme.

“It’s important that we develop and nurture the next generation of water industry professionals to make sure we continue to be leaders in the planning, supply, management and delivery of water.”

Mr Spiller said Seqwater’s Next Generation Program was critical to the organisation’s future.

Ten graduates, 16 trainees and two apprentices have been recruited in the 2017-18 financial year. In any given year, Seqwater aims to have 30-35 employees as part of its Next Generation Program or almost 5 per cent of the organisation’s workforce.

“We have some of Australia’s most experienced water professionals who are passionate about what they do and are very keen to be able to pass on their knowledge to the next generation," Mr Spiller said. "This is a key element of the program."

Mr Spiller said demand for a career in the water industry was strong.

More than 1600 people applied for traineeships over the past year as interested as well as another 450 who had applied for Seqwater’s graduate program.

Among this year’s intake of graduates was Engineering Grad Kurt Cabading who said he was looking forward to building on his education and gaining real life experience in the water industry.

“Programs like this are great opportunities for people to get their foot in the door, gain experience and take the next step in their careers,” Mr Cabading said.

“I am looking forward to learning more about Seqwater and developing my skills, knowledge and experience in the water industry.”
